Greenwood is steeped in the history of both the nation in general and the Commonwealth of Virginia in particular. The Greenwood Tunnel was constructed by Claudius Crozet during the construction of the Blue Ridge Railroad and was one of the arteries used to open up passage through the Blue Ridge Mountains in the late 19th century.

Greenwood is part of the Greenwood-Afton Historic District, a national historic district that encompasses 839 contributing buildings, 55 contributing sites, 68 contributing structures, and 2 contributing objects. In addition to the historic district, ten historic Greenwood homes are listed separately on the National Historic Register: Emmanuel Church, Mirador (the childhood home of Nancy Astor), Seven Oaks Farm and Black’s Tavern (which was frequented by Thomas Jefferson in the pre-revolutionary era), The Cedars, Casa Maria, Blue Ridge Farm, Piedmont, and Ramsay. These historic homes are from all periods of American history, from colonial to Civil War to the turn-of-the-century.

Greenwood is convenient to both Wintergreen, a year-round resort that offers outdoor recreational activities and sports instruction, and Shenandoah National Park, home to Skyline Drive which overlooks the Blue Ridge, as well as to over 500 miles of hiking trails and 200,000 acres of federally protected forest.
