Afton

Having it All, Away from it All

Afton is situated 20 miles west of Charlottesville in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Originally located along the old C&O railroad, Afton first earned renown as a haven for tourists who were seeking a rural escape from city living. Access to Afton was largely made possible by the construction of the Blue Ridge Railroad, a professor of engineering at West Point and the namesake of the nearby town of Crozet. Rockfish Gap, a wind gap cutting through the Blue Ridge and Afton Mountain, joins the Shenandoah Valley with the Virginia Piedmont and is the Interstate 64 and US Route 250. Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway meet just north of the gap, and the Appalachian Trail and CSX Railroad (formerly C&O) pass through the gap. Thanks in no small part to being a major intersection in a spectacular natural area, Afton now sees over millions of tourists pass through on a yearly basis.

Design and Nature in Harmony

Residences and properties for sale in Afton are predominantly reasonably priced single-family homes that nevertheless feature brilliant views and spacious square footage. Afton homes are a marriage of exquisite design and natural elegance, all featuring unsurpassable Blue Ridge Mountain views. The properties are convenient to Stoney Creek Golf Course, Route 151, and the major central Virginia highway arteries.

A Lifetime of Options

Between nature, sports, and the various area beverage makers, the recreational opportunities in Afton are almost too numerous to mention. Nearby Wintergreen Resort offers year-round sports and sports instruction, including skiing, tennis, and swimming. It also offers a whole host of dining options, and is home to The Wintergreen Nature Foundation, which supports and promotes wildlife preservation in Afton.

Nearby Route 151 in Nelson County, locally known as “Virginia’s Weekend Address”, is home to a plethora of wineries, breweries, and cideries. Blue Mountain Brewery, Afton Mountain Vineyards, and Bold Rock Hard Cider are just a handful of the highly acclaimed beverage makers in the area.

For those looking for a taste of history, Afton is home to Swananoa, an Italian marble villa located high atop the Blue Ridge. Designed and built by C&O executive James Dooley as a gift for his wife Sally May, the villa is a replica of the Villa de Medici in Rome and is preserved today as a tourist destination and a site for weddings and other events.
