Schuyler homes for sale

Schuyler is a small community at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the Rockfish River in Nelson County, Virginia. Many Schuyler homes feature large acreage, privacy, and spectacular mountain views. Located near Route 29 and between the towns of Lovingston and Scottsville, Schuyler residents can enjoy quiet county life while still having excellent access to the amenities of Charlottesville and Lynchburg.

Seated atop one of the largest soapstone veins in the world, many Schuyler homes were originally built to house quarriers who worked for the Alberene Soapstone Company. The town flourished at the height of soapstone’s popularity in the early 1900s, which was when many of the buildings that now compose the Schuyler Historic District were built. Soapstone is still mined in the area today, and several of the inactive quarries are now part of the Quarry Gardens at Schuyler, a 40-acre garden of native plants and walking trails.

Schuyler is perhaps best known as the birthplace of writer and television producer Earl Hamner, Jr., who based the show The Waltons on his childhood in Schuyler during the Great Depression. Today, visitors to Schuyler can tour two different museums dedicated to Hamner and his legacy: the Walton’s Mountain Museum, located in the old Schuyler Elementary School building and containing set replicas from the classic TV show, and the Walton Hamner House, the house where Hamner grew up.
