Sweet Living, Steady Progress

The Town of Orange, located 28 miles northeast of Charlottesville and 4 miles east of James Madison’s Montpelier, is the seat of Orange County. The Town’s motto, “sweet living, steady progress,” is rooted in the incremental growth it has experienced in a history that dates back before the revolutionary war.

The Town’s story dates back to 1752 when the Town of Orange Courthouse was established in what is the modern-day downtown. Infrastructure increased along with the regional agricultural market, and up until the Civil War, the downtown saw multiple buildings constructed, including Holladay House, a nationally recognized historic place that features a doorway that is identical to the one at Montpelier, the nearby estate of James Madison.

Orange is situated in the north-central Piedmont region. Residents enjoy some of the most unsurpassable landscapes and views anywhere in the Commonwealth of Virginia, including panoramic vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Despite its vivid history and rural setting, the Town of Orange and the surrounding county boasts a vibrant and growing economy that is home to over 800 businesses. The homes for sale in Orange allow anyone the opportunity to be a part of this eclectic community. Residents and tourists can enjoy numerous outlets for natural and historical tourism, several vineyards, and a robust, eclectic culinary scene in Orange and surrounding towns.

Something for Everyone

Orange’s rich and varied history is on full display in its bustling town center. The Orange Train Station, built in the Colonial Revival Style in 1910, was renovated in 1997 after train service was discontinued, and it now serves as the home of the Orange County Tourism and Visitors Bureau. The James Madison Museum features a significant amount of the former president’s personal belongings as well as artifacts from several other former presidents. There’s also a rich menu of dining and drinking options at various inns and restaurants, many of them boasting a historical flair from their locations in renovated historical homes and buildings.
