Barboursville

History, Culture, Viniculture

Located at the intersection of Virginia Route 20 and US Route 29, the Barboursville community is a unique mix of historical significance, cultural sophistication, and modern convenience. The routes provide easy access to the major highway arteries such as U.S. 29 toward the Charlottesville/Albemarle Airport and Washington D.C., and I-64 toward Richmond. Barboursville is named after James Barbour, former Governor and U.S. Senator, and is the birthplace of Zachary Taylor, 12thth president of the United States. “The Barboursville Ruins,” Barbour’s former residence (designed by Thomas Jefferson) is now home to Barboursville Vineyards, the first winery to plant grape vines in the region since Jefferson tried and failed to do so during his lifetime.

Find a Home, or Build One

Among properties for sale in Barboursville you’ll find a mix of single-family homes and multi-acre lots. The homes are the best of all worlds, with spacious houses that total thousands of square feet, lots that span multiple acres, and gorgeous pastoral views in an area that’s convenient to the City of Charlottesville and some of the area’s major employers. The open lots are perfect for families or individuals looking to build a new home and in many cases feature waterfront properties, a rarity in central Virginia.

A Jewel on its Own

Barboursville homes may be convenient to Charlottesville and Albemarle, but it’s no mere suburb. It has a rich, vibrant culture and is a major hub of tourist activity.

Four County Players, Virginia’s longest continuously operating community theater, was founded in 1973 and since then has performed seasonal productions, organized an Employment Experience Program, and engaged patrons to sponsor programs for young thespians and technicians. Through a partnership with Barboursville Vineyards they staged Shakespearean plays at the Barboursville ruins from 1990-2006.

Barboursville Vineyards itself is at the vanguard of the Virginia Wine culture and has been recognized with a host of honors for its vintages. Octagon, their signature red wine blend, won gold medals in 2018 at the Virginia Governor’s Cup and the Texsom International competitions.
