Over 200 Years at the Center of History

Located 19 miles northeast of Charlottesville in Orange County, the town of Gordonsville was founded in 1813 when Nathaniel Gordon was appointed as the area’s first postmaster. James Madison’s Montpelier, the historic estate of “the Father of the Constitution”, is a short 12-minute drive from the town center. Montpelier features tours of the historic home, archaeological sites, and over 8 miles of walking trails.

The town itself is the site of Gordon’s Tavern, a site of historical significance situated at the intersection of “The Fredericksburg Great Road” and “The Richmond Road.” Thomas Jefferson personally recommended the Tavern to residents of the Washington DC that were traveling on the way to Richmond. Many of the major figures of the American Revolution, including George Washington, Henry Clay, and General Lafayette, stayed as guests on the Tavern in the early days of the republic.

After serving as a major hub for troop movement and supplies during the Civil War, Gordonsville evolved into a quiet market town, featuring culinary festivals, farmers’ markets, and opportunities to partake in the fine arts.
