Free Union

A Community in Unity with Nature

Ten miles northwest of Charlottesville is a quiet gem of a town called Free Union. Originally named ‘Nicksville’ after a freed slave who set up a blacksmith’s shop in the early 19th century, it was rechristened Free Union in the mid-nineteenth century. Despite the presence of several homes, businesses, and a nearby winery, Free Union and its residents live in harmony with nature and the landscape is virtually unspoiled by any man-made development.

Residents of Free Union are treated daily to sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Southwest Mountains, and some homeowners/land buyers are lucky enough to have views of large ponds and diverse wildlife. Hikers and riders can find unparalleled hiking and riding trails throughout the area.

Free Union is home to the Farmington Hunt Club, an American Hound hunting group formed in 1929 to revive the old Albemarle Hunt Club that went dormant during the First World War. The group hosts seasonal events at nearby Farmington Country Club, a private club that features 27 holes of golf and a clubhouse featuring a room designed by Thomas Jefferson himself. They also host public seasonal hunting events and have even organized a running of the hounds on the grounds of the nearby Miller School.

A View for Forever

Properties for sale in Free Union are predominantly wide open single-family homes that feature rolling landscapes, brilliant architecture, and spacious square footage. Most properties in Free Union are multiple acres and feature a striking mix of woodlands with tall with mature trees, open pastures with well-manicured grounds, and the occasional pond and stream. Despite the pastoral nature of the area, Free Union is conveniently located to the City of Charlottesville and is only 20 minutes away from the Charlottesville/Albemarle Regional Airport.

Modern Amenities in a Natural Setting

Free Union residents have easy access to the Free Union Country School, a private elementary school serving preschool through fifth grade. The school features a spacious six-acre campus with five buildings, an outstanding student-to-teacher ratio, and has a history of graduating its students into the top middle schools in the area.

For recreation, residents are a short trip away from Glass House Winery and Potter’s Craft Cider. Glass House was founded in 2006 with the goal of bringing, in its owner’s words, “a tropical flair to the Monticello Wine Trail.” In addition to their award-winning wines, Glass House features gourmet chocolates prepared by an in-house chocolatier. A pair of Princeton graduates founded Potter’s when their love of homebrewing grew into a passion for craft cider. Potter’s takes full advantage of being in the heart of apple country at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
