Dillwyn

Dillwyn is a town in central Buckingham County, Virginia. Located an hour south of Charlottesville and an hour east of Lynchburg, Dillwyn homes are perfectly located for country living without sacrificing access to big city amenities. US Route 15 runs directly through Dillwyn, connecting Washington, DC to Durham, North Carolina.

Two of the many historic Dillwyn homes and buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Peter Francisco House is an 18th-century farmhouse that once belonged to Revolutionary War soldier and folk hero Peter Francisco, also known as the “Virginia Giant.” Originally known as Locust Grove, the house’s official name was changed to reflect its most famous occupant and to prevent confusion with the neighborhood in Charlottesville and the community in Orange County that bear the same name. The house fell into disrepair in the 20th century but it was restored in the early 1970s.

The other building in Dillwyn on the National Register of Historic Places is the Buckingham Training School, a trade school for African Americans built by the Rosenwald Fund in 1932. In the mid-1950s, it became an elementary school before its closure in 1964. Today, the structure and its grounds serve as a park and community center.
