One hour north of Charlottesville and 50 minutes east of Fredericksburg is the historic town of Culpeper. The only incorporated town in Culpeper County, it was originally founded as the town of Fairfax before being renamed in 1869. A young George Washington surveyed the town while serving as protégé to Lord Fairfax, the town’s original namesake. Renowned in US History as the home of the Culpeper Minutemen, a pro-independence militia that distinguished itself in battle during the American Revolution, Culpeper grew dramatically during the 1980s as a satellite commuter town for former residents of Northern Virginia and Washington D.C. who felt those areas were growing overpopulated.

Culpeper sits at the intersection of multiple highways including US 29 which extends southeast toward Charlottesville and Interstate 64, US 15 which connects south toward Orange and Gordonsville, and US 522 which connects north toward Northern Virginia and Interstate 64. It is also home to an Amtrak station that provides service to Boston and New Orleans, a regional airport, and regional bus service via Virginia Regional Transit.

Just outside of the city you’ll find all the outdoor options that make Virginia the envy of the nation. Yowell Meadow Park in downtown features an easy one-mile walking trail and a more challenging, technical trail for experienced hikers. Culpeper has a robust equestrian community and several options for horseback riding, plus nearby Lake Pelham offers water lovers the chance to indulge in hours of canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.
